FCS Fins Press Release on Tony Silvagni

February 24th, 2011 Comments off

For Immediate Release

Friday December 19, 2008

Tony Silvagni qualifies for the 2009 World Championship Main Event on FCS.

After a two-week run of back-to-back contests in California, Tony Silvagni’s 4th Place finish in the Costa Del Mar Championships boosted him into the 2009 World Championship Main Event.

It started off at the Oxbow World Championships at San Onofre State Beach from Nov. 5th – 9th. Conditions were clean, about chest to head high. Getting put out in the first round of the trials Tony felt like he didn’t have enough time to prepare due to flying in the previous day but still ran a good heat.

Being the aware competitor that Tony is he noticed that judges were scoring high on performance maneuvers as opposed to noseriding. With that in mind Tony dialed in his equipment by using 2 GL FCS side bites with a 6” Single fin.

With a week to prepare, the Costa Del Mar Championships arrived. With conditions staying similar to the last week Tony made the final and placed 4th out of some of the top 72 longboarders in the world. The result was just enough for Tony to qualify for the 2009 World Championships Main Event. “I’m really happy to make the final,” Silvagni said. “This is a really big result for me. I cannot be happier. I’ve always done really well at this place.”

Everyone here at FCS would like to extend a huge congratulations to Tony and we look forward to working with him fine tune his equipment for the 2009 season.

Jupiter Fall Classic Surf Contest- November 19th-21st

December 3rd, 2010 Comments off

Greetings everyone:

This is Tony Silvagni with an update on a contest that I recently competed in Jupiter, Florida November 19th -21st in the Jupiter Fall Classic.  I flew all the way to Florida from Hawaii.  When I landed in the West Palm Beach airport, I ran into Scottie Pippen and his family who were originally on my flight back from Chicago to West Palm Beach.  Scottie knew who I was as I got onto the plane from watching fuel TV from last years competition in Costa Rica when I competed for the USA World Surf Team.  I was shocked as I am the one asking a picture from him!!!

Meanwhile my surfboards and bags got shipped to Fort Lauderdale Airport where I had to drive laster that night to pick them up for the competition.  The waves were small for both days of the contest.  Pretty decent turn out for the Pro Shortboard, but minimal entries for the Pro Longboard.  I ended up signing up for the Pro Shortboard as a beach entry and made my first heat and lost in the following round to Cody Thompson, CT Taylor, and Asher Nolan.  Fun experience picking up a shortboard that I have never ridden before and take out some big names in my first round heat.  I love to shortboard and will always ride both boards.  Pretty cool to see most pro shortboarders switch over to the longboard and absolutely rip!  Mike Losness and Ben Bourgeios both rip on longboarders!

Anyhow, I ended up competing in the longboard and placing 2nd in the Pro Longboard Final.  As the contest season starts slowing down, I began to work on fine tuning more boards and getting ready for the 2011 year.  My next trip is it to Fiji to stay from December 17th-26th.  I will be surfing some of the best breaks in the world at Cloudbreak and Restaurants just to name a few.  Hopefully I will catch it good.

In January, I will be starting back for college to finish my last year of college while competing in contests all along the East Coast while maintaining my education.  Sixteen semester hour credits and surfing will be a mission to accomplish, but I feel I will be able to accomplish it! In the mean time, Merry Christmas to you and have a Happy New Year if I don’t speak to you all before then.

Best Regards,

Tony Silvagni

2010 World Longboard Championships- Makaha, Hawaii

November 7th, 2010 Comments off

Greeting everybody!

October 31st- November 7th,  I competed in the Oxbow World Longboard Championships  at Makaha, Hawaii.   The top 32 professional longboarders in the world competing for a world title! The surf was 4-6 foot Hawaiian with bigger sets on occasion.  What better of surf could everybody ask for in a surf event!  Duane Desoto wins the world title this year from Makaha, Hawaii.  What a special day for the 33 year old native from Makaha, Hawaii to win on his homebreak.

Before the event, I broke my board duck diving a wave.  I immediately came in and took my fins of my board to put in my back up board to get ready for my first heat of the contest.  I was so excited before I even went out in my first heat again Keegan Edwards from Hawaii.  I found out prior to my heat that we would be getting jet ski tow outs to the break to get back in the line up after we caught a wave.   I was a bit nervous riding on the back of a jet ski with my board knowing that I only had 1 more board for the event.  Anyhow, it was the best feeling to ride on the back of the jet ski back out to the break after catching a wave.  You didn’t have to exert so much energy paddling back out, instead you get a JET SKI ride!!!  Anyhow, I ended up winning my first heat advancing onto the 2nd round of the Oxbow World Longboard Championships!  Next round was against Phil Razman  from Brazil who is a former world champ back in 2007.   The wind picked up right before my round 2 heat and I couldn’t find a wave for my life.  My heat total was 6 points compared to Phil Razman’s heat total of 14.  I am very stoked on my equal 9th result out of the top 32 longboarders in the world! Each year I plan to improve on my equipment and eventually achieve my ultimate goal of winning a world title!!  Super stoked to make the world longboard tour for 2011 for my third consecutive year.  Next heading off to Jupiter, Florida November 17th- 28th.  Keep posted for more news coming soon…..

Thanks for reading my blog.

PACSUN USA Surf Team in Punta Hermosa, Peru

November 7th, 2010 Comments off

October 15th-28th, 2010

What a great opportunity to surf for the PACSUN USA Surf Team for my second consecutive year against 31 different countries in Punta Hermosa, Peru!  This is how the trip went down….I first started off flying from Hawaii to California and catch a cab from LAX airport to my aunts house.  The next morning on October 16th, 2010 I visited my Grandma at the assistant living home near by to my aunts house.  My grandma has Parkinson’s disease and it was very special to have breakfast with her.  She has an incredible friends at the assistant living home that watch over here.  The same morning, we ended up flying out from the airport mid day to Lima, Peru with the entire USA Surf Team.  Once we got to Peru, we jumped in a travel bus where Steve Newton and I had to put our boards inside the bus through the window to have them fit! What an interesting task that was to get the boards inside :)  The first couple of days the entire USA Surf Team trained on both breaks- Caballeros and Senoritas.  Caballeros is a left hand point break and Senoritas is a right hand point break.  Both surf breaks were different podiums for the contest to take place at for all three divisions- mens shortboard, mens longboard, and womens shortboard.  The contest took place on October 20th and lasted till October 27th.  Overall our entire PACSUN USA Surf team placed 6th out of 31 different countries.  Last year we were defending gold champions, but this year we had a ton of our competitors get sick and Ben Bourgeios broke his board in his heat.  Not everything went our way, but overall we did our very best!  Both Kulia Doherty and Nikki Veisens did very well being only 14 years old competing in their first ever ISA World Games! I placed equal 7th in the Men’s Longboard divison for our PACSUN USA Surf team.   The hospitality, transportation, new friends, coaches- Ian Cairns and Sean Mattison, Surfing America- Michael Gerard and Alisa Cairns- travel reservations, Kevyn Dean- sports trainer, Billy Watts- Photographer, Jesse Schluntz- Videographer,  Team- Micah Byrnes, Ben Bourgeios, Mike Losness, Trevor Thornton, Steve Newton, Kulia Doherty, and Nikki Veisens all made the trip one of my favorite surf events to compete in as an entire team effort.   After the event was over, we all packed our bags and headed to the Lima airport.  Next I fly to LAX and then the same morning take off to Honolulu, Hawaii to get ready for the Oxbow World Longboard Championships October 31st- November 7th.  Check out all the photos from our trip on my facebook page- Tony Silvagni.

Thanks for your time everybody ….stay posted for many more updates…

Malibu Surfing Championships and Belmar Pro

September 30th, 2010 Comments off

September 10th- 21st traveling from Hawaii to Malibu- CA, Phoenix, Baltimore, Raleigh, Myrtle Beach, Atlantic City-NJ, La Guardia- NY back to Chicago to Phoenix to Orange County, night at the Castro house in Tustin-CA, and then Artie drove me to LAX and I flew from there to Oahu-Hawaii all in 11 days!

September 11th and 12 the Malibu Surfing Championships took place at Malibu, Calfornia where I competed in the Men’s Longboard 20-29 years of age for the Virginia Longboard Federation.  In 2009, I competed in both open mens and mens longboard.  This year I was defending my 2009 mens longboard title and ended up repeating my win for the mens longboard division for 2010.  The Malibu Surfing Championships is one of my favorite surf contests to compete in.  5 other competitors surfing the point at Malibu….you can’t beat it.  My friend Jamie Bond came to the event to watch the contest along with Arties wife and kids.  We all stayed at the Good Nite Inn at Calabash.  Friday night before the event took place, the competition directors put a party on with a huge raffle giving away 2 tickets to Australia, trip to hawaii, product from etnies, product from girl skateboards, and Sofia Mulanovichs surfboard.  Lucky I enough, I ended up winning Sofia’s surfboard.  I have never really won anything in a raffle.

After flying from Orange County, CA to Phoenix to catch my direct flight to Raleigh, NC.  Although, my flight was delayed from Orange County to Phoenix which caused me to miss my flight to Raleigh, NC.  I ended up missing my flight and stayed in the airport at Baltimore,MD.  The next morning after waiting around for 6 hours in the airport where I couldn’t sleep till 7 a.m. to catch my flight from Baltimore to Raleigh.  Finally, I arrived at Raleigh, NC around 8 a.m. and got picked up from buddy Fitz and CJ who brought me home to my bed.  I ended up running a few errands and shortly afterwards I slept the afternoon away.

Tuesday night, I received an outstanding award for the town of Carolina Beach for saving 27 lifes this past summer when we had really bad rip currents.  My mom came to the chamber and watched me receive the award.  My mom was almost in tears afterwards because she was really proud of me.

On Thursday, I flew up to Atlantic City where my buddy picked me up to compete in the Belmar Pro.  My mom, Barb Silvagni flew up to NJ to watch the contest and spend the weekend before I flew back to California.  The Finnigan family had my mom and I stay at their home and we had the best time ever as usual!  There house is so beautiful and they always give the best hospitality.  The dinner on Saturday night was amazing and spending time in the hot tub and pool was super relaxing.

The entire time being in New Jersey, I caught amazing waves!  The swell was up and there were tons of surfers competing in the Belmar Pro.  After being in the water for 7 hours a day, I saved enough energy for the final on Sunday to take the win in the Pro Longboard division.

After the event was over with, the competition directors did the award ceremony on the stage.  After the awards, I packed all my clothes up and left my board bag and board at the Finnigan house and took off to New York to catch my flight that left at 6:05 a.m. the next morning.  Flying back from La Guardia, NY to Orange County on my return was a nice relaxing flight back.  I ended up staying the night at Arties house to have dinner with his family and then I flew out on Tuesday morning, September 21st back to Hawaii.  Once I arrived in Oahu, Hawaii I finally got to surf some amazing 3 foot surf at Kaneohe Base on the east side of the island!  Stay tuned for my next advenutures……Peru in 2 1/2 weeks for the International Surfing Games for the USA World Surf Team where we will be competing against 32 different countries.  Thanks for your time!

Sincerely,

TONY SILVAGNI

Toes on The Nose Pro Waikiki, Hawaii

September 2nd, 2010 Comments off

This past week I competed in the Toes on the Nose Pro in Waikiki, Hawaii August 25th and 26th at the surf break Queens.  The event was an Association of Surfing Professional event for the North America ratings for Longboard Qualifying Series.  The wave conditions were small for both days of the competition.  On Wednesday, August 25th I competed in round 1 and the quarter finals to advance on to Thursday, August 26th in the Semi-finals.  On Thursday I got 3rd in the semi-finals unfortunately not advancing into the final later that afternoon.  Overall I placed equal 5th place in the competition for Pro Longboard and racked up some points for the ASP North America ratings.

Next event I will be competing in is September 11th and 12th in the Malibu Surfing Championships.  I will be staying with the Castro family in a hotel near by to the contest.  My aunt, cousins, and grandma will most likely be coming down to the event to watch me compete and cheer me on.  On September 13th, I will be flying home to see my mom for a few days and we will be heading up to NJ together for the Belmar Pro Surf Contest taking place September 18th and 19th in Belmar, NJ.
