This past week I competed in the Toes on the Nose Pro in Waikiki, Hawaii August 25th and 26th at the surf break Queens. The event was an Association of Surfing Professional event for the North America ratings for Longboard Qualifying Series. The wave conditions were small for both days of the competition. On Wednesday, August 25th I competed in round 1 and the quarter finals to advance on to Thursday, August 26th in the Semi-finals. On Thursday I got 3rd in the semi-finals unfortunately not advancing into the final later that afternoon. Overall I placed equal 5th place in the competition for Pro Longboard and racked up some points for the ASP North America ratings.

Next event I will be competing in is September 11th and 12th in the Malibu Surfing Championships. I will be staying with the Castro family in a hotel near by to the contest. My aunt, cousins, and grandma will most likely be coming down to the event to watch me compete and cheer me on. On September 13th, I will be flying home to see my mom for a few days and we will be heading up to NJ together for the Belmar Pro Surf Contest taking place September 18th and 19th in Belmar, NJ.

Tony Silvagni just competed in the Guy Takayama Pro Longboard Classic this past weekend August 13th-15th in Oceanside, California on the southside of the oceanside pier. The wave conditions were in the stomach high range (1-2 feet) with glassy conditions. Tony took down the Pro Open Longboard with classic traditional noserides with carving cut backs and vertical hits. The places followed from 1st- 4th: Tony Silvagni, Taylor Jenson, Richie Cravey, Steve Newton.

Tony also competed in the nose riding division taking a 2nd place Pro Noseriding finish. He accumulated 20.95 seconds on the nose for timing in a close finish for all 4 competitors being a second or two behind one another.

The Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club chose Tony Silvagni to compete for their club in the men’s Pro/Am division where he placed 1st overall. There was a paddle race with 8 teams racing around a buoy for all six paddlers on each team doing a relay where team Oceanside won by almost a lap against all the other teams. Tony was the 1st person on the team to start the race.

Now Tony is currently in Hawaii where is about to start competing in the Toes on the Nose competition this Wednesday and Thursday August 25th and 26th at the break Queens in Waikiki.

Greetings:
College, Surf Contests, and my surf school business has been taking up most of my time lately for the past 2 months which has been a ton of excitment in my life. Recently, I just got back from Costa Rica where I competed in the second Longboard Qualifying Series event at Puntaranes- Boca Barranca. Fun event, great vibes, friends, and tons of food at the Doubletree Fiesta Hotel where everyone stayed at. I made the semi-finals in the competition, but missed my heat since the front desk wrote down the wrong room number to give my 5 a.m. wake up call. Lesson learned and now I will travel with multiple alarm clocks! ha ha… I ran down a half of a mile to the contest site to find out that they were running the competition for the guys first and saw my heat in the water. By the time I got to the competition site, they were counting down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 to end my heat. Overall I placed equal 7th and now ranked 2nd overall on the Association of Surfing Professional North America ratings for the longboard qualifying series for 2010 with 4 contests left. Some of the other events that I have competed in the past two months were the Ocean Beach LQS # 1, East Coast Scholastic Surfing Championships, and the Ron Jon Easter Surf Festival. For a list of results check them all out below:

February 20th-21st Ocean Beach Longboard Qualifying Series event #1- 1st place Pro Longboard (1st ASP win of my life)
March 26th-27th East Coast Scholastic Championships- 1st place Tag Team Challenge (Team- Michael Powell, Ben Powell, Ian Tilghman, & Tony Silvagni)
April 1st-4th Ron Jon Easter Surfing Festival- 2nd place Pro Longboard
April 7th-11th Pro Longboard Association Longboard Qualifying Series event # 2- equal 7th place Pro Longboard

Next event is tomorrow if there are any waves for the Daytona Longboard Classic in Daytona Beach, FL.
May 29th-31st Steele Pier Longboard Classic in Virginia Beach, VA.
June 4th-6th Longboard Qualifying Series event in Huntington Beach, CA.

I will be on the USA World Surf Team again this year competing in the International Surfing Games in Peru October 16th-27th and on the World Longboard Tour competing in the World Championships at Makaha, Hawaii October 30th-November 7th.

I will be heading off to Oahu, Hawaii with my mom May 11th- 23rd to get the rest of the logistics done for my Hawaii Surf Travel Camp and to visit my girlfriend, Pumehana.

My surf lessons, surf camps, stand up paddle boarding will all be running while I am gone competing in these events with my highly qualified and professional staff. I am looking forward to a busy summer for Tony Silvagni Surf School.

Thank you to you all for the support and all the kind words. I am truly blessed to have such an amazing lifestyle and never take it for granit.

Greetings From Hawaii- March 8th, 2010

I am currently over in Hawaii spending time with my girlfriend Pumehana & working on website content/rates/new ideas for the 2010 year for Tony Silvagni Surf School. Just wanted to let everyone know that I will running my camp the entire summer and I will be in town to teach surf lessons. I am starting up a Hawaii Surf Travel Camp over to Oahu, Hawaii. Stay tuned for updates coming soon….Below is an interview from Eastern Surf Magazine with Matt Pruett about my first ever Association of Surfing Professional victory in Ocean Beach, California. Here is a link to the Eastern Surf Magazine website to check out pictures they put up of me.

http://www.easternsurf.com/aspbox_030210/

Here is the write up below:

Flotsam. Jetsam… Get some!

At least that’s what Tony Silvagni thought when he looked out at the mess skirting Ocean Beach Pier in California. Wild and wooly 10- to 12-foot conditions at the ASP’s Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) 2-Star Ocean Beach PLA Pro prompted organizers to consider halting the event before the Kure Beach, NC, regularfoot and other competitors spoke up, saying they were game. Meanwhile, the four women’s finalists of the conjoining Ocean Beach PLA Pro Presented By Gidget opted not to charge the gnar, instead evenly dividing the ratings points and prizemoney. But the 23-year-old Silvagni utilized his amplified froth level to out-surf his male opponents (including three-time ASP World Longboard Champion Colin McPhillips) and take home his maiden ASP-sanctioned 1st-place check.

The Ocean Beach PLA Pro represents the first of six events on the 2010 ASP North America LQS calendar, and Silvagni’s gritty, rail-to-rail carves and timeless noseriding proved to be the difference, along with his superior endurance. “I’ve made so many finals and it feels amazing to finally win an ASP LQS event,” Silvagni told ASP press correspondents. “It’s always been my goal to start the year out on top and it’s great to finally accomplish that.”

Silvagni is enjoying his sophomore year on the ASP World Longboard Tour (WLT) and his senior year at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). His ultimate dream is an ASP World Longboard Championship, but after tasting his first big victory in San Diego, he still has a few short-term goals to knock out first. We bugged Tony on his way to the San Diego International Airport to find out what those goals are:

ESM: Congrats on the win. Is now a good time to talk?

Tony Silvagni: Oh yeah, I have a flight in a half-hour. I got a big-ass drink in one hand, my phone in the other, a plate of chicken enchiladas in my lap, and a coffee next to me. I’m ready.

ESM: We can’t assume everyone’s seen the press releases, so describe the mood of the event.

TS: The results were based on whoever had the most energy throughout the day. The girls opted not to surf, and a couple of the guys wanted to cancel the Men’s event, as well. I wanted to keep surfing. It was a really hectic morning. The surf was huge, breaking all the way out to the end of the pier, and there was a super high tide. The water actually washed up over the wall and past the scaffolding at OB Pier, knocked this guy off his bike, and pushed him all the way into the road. He came up making this funny barrel pose after getting slammed and dragged all over the concrete. It was hilarious.

ESM: How important is this victory in the scheme of your budding career?

TS: This is huge for me. It’s the first LQS win of my life, and all those guys surf so well. But they couldn’t stop my headstand. That’s what got me the win.

ESM: Headstand? Seriously?

TS: Nah [laughs]… Don’t write that, I’m just kidding. I didn’t do a friggin’ headstand. Just trying to be funny.

ESM: Leave that to us, okay? Continue please…

TS: I felt like I surfed really well all weekend. I won all my heats and posted the second-highest heat total of the day in my semifinal. Then in the final, I caught a few big ones but didn’t connect all the way to the beach before falling. But I got my last wave with 45 seconds left, ended up cross-stepping into a hang-five on the steepest part of wave, freefell all the way down and landed it, and did another turn for a 7.9 and the win.

ESM: Was it sweeter to win under such challenging circumstances?

TS: The waves were hectic, but I just stayed positive. I didn’t even mind the conditions. I had only been surfing two times in the past month — once in Puerto Rico and one time at home. The weather’s been so crazy in North Carolina, like six inches of snow for the first time in ten years. Plus I’ve been really busy with school at UNCW. I basically had to get here Friday, then practice enough to get my rhythm going before surfing my heats on Sunday, because I was seeded into the Round of 32, then catch a Monday morning flight.

ESM: What was the key to victory?

TS: Not breaking your surfboard. Seven boards were broken by the time we reached the final. If that happened and you were outside it would take you at least 12 to 15 minutes to catch one in and get a backup, and that’s only if you had half a board to paddle in on. Some guys had to swim in to shore and couldn’t catch up. I just took the rip next to the pier every time. I’m pretty fit as far as running and swimming a lot. But once you got away from that pier, you got sucked way down the beach no matter how strong you could paddle.

ESM: How did you celebrate?

TS: I went out for sushi with Kai Sallas, Noah Shimabukuro, Brendan White, and Madison Olson. Kept it pretty mellow. Like I said, I had to fly back home for school the next day.

ESM: So what now, Champ?

TS: I’m going to do all the LQS events for the rest of the year, as well as the two LWT events. I’m going down to Florida for the Daytona Beach Longboard Classic, then Costa Rica for another ‘QS contest. I’m also moving to Hawaii in August to get set up there with my girlfriend. But first I’ll be getting home at 12:00 a.m. tonight to wake up early tomorrow and take exams. I need to get that degree before I do anything else.

Greetings everyone!
I am home for a week and then off again for the next 2 months. I just returned home from Chaaya Island, Maldives where I competed in the Oxbow World Longboard Championships. I surfed well in my heat, but did not advance into the next round. Overall for the 2009 year I placed 24th overall in the world. Currently I am ranked 3rd on the Association of Surfing Professional for North America ratings. I will be heading out to Oceanside, California to compete in the last World Qualifying Series event to determine who makes the world tour for 2010 from the North America ratings. The top three competitors: Steve Newton, Josh Baxter, and I are in a close running to make the world tour. Two out of three surfers will make the world longboard tour based on this last event with the overall points added up. I have been working hard everyday training with my new boards and staying focused on making the world longboard tour for 2010. I have to thank you all first for all of your support this year for my surfing career. I am very blessed to have an incredible friends and family believing in me.

I hope you all are doing well and keep in touch.

Next trips:
WQS Event # 6 Oceanside, CA November 14th&15th
Oahu, Hawaii November 17th till December 24th to get a job and surf the north shore.

All the best,

Dear Sponsors and Friends:
I am back in the United States from a two stay in Brasil where I competed in two professional surf contests. I placed 5th in the first event at Salvador, Bahia in the Bahia International Longboard Classic for Pro Longboard division out of 56 guys from South America. I was the only competitor to compete in the contest from the U.S.A. In the second event, I placed equal 9th overall in the Permanbuco International Classic. Then, I returned back to the United States on September 30th and prepared for the next event in Ocean Beach, California where I competed in the Association of Surfing Professional World Qualifying Series event number 5 event hosted by the Pro Longboard Association. The wave conditions were storm surf for the contest at Ocean Beach on October 5th for the Men’s Pro Longboard division. I placed 3rd place in the competition to bring my seeding in the Association of Surfing Professional to 3rd place in the rankings out of 101 professional longboarders. There is one contest left and I am in a good position to make the World Longboard Tour for 2010. The last event is in Oceanside, California November 13th- 15th and will determine the overall outcome of who qualifies for the World Tour for 2010 from North America. Kai Sallas from Hawaii is ranked 1st, Steve Newton from California is 2nd, Tony Silvagni from North Carolina is 3rd, and Josh Baxter from California is 4th. I am coming home on Friday, October 9th and will be home till October 22nd until I leave out again for the Maldives for the final World Longboard Championships to crown who is World Champion for 2009.

I hope you all are doing well.

Best Regards,

Hey Everyone….

This past weekend September 17th-20th, I competed in the Bahia International Longboard Pro where I placed 5th overall out of the top 56 professional longboards from peru, argentina, brazil, & venezuela. I made it to the man on man round to compete against Picaruta Salazar from Brazil in the quarterfinals. The heat was a tight heat where I was comboed and had to come back from being down by 17 points. I ended up needing a 8.68 to win the heat and I got a 8.67 to tie with Picaruta. Since he had 2 high scores of a 8.0 and a 9.0 and my scores were a 8.67 and 8.33…..he took the win because he had a higher one wave score of a 9.0 compared to my 8.67. Picaruta was the overall champion of the event. I am having such a great time over here in Brazil. I am now in Maracaipe which is an hour from Receife, Brazil. The next competition starts up this coming Friday, September 24th-27th. I will keep you all posted on my next competition.

Best Regards,
